The intention of the Portland Museum is to advance the education of the public by providing and maintaining artefacts and specimens relating to the natural sciences, natural history, archaeology, literature, music, the fine-decorative arts, antiques and local history relating in particular to the Island of Portland.  We are a member of the Dorset Museums Association.

The Portland Museum Web has been sponsored by The Skinner's Company, Lady Neville Charity .

The museum building is listed and has a limited amount of accessibility and space. This website (when completed) will we hope have a dual role; firstly to inform the public of its presence, makeup and its yearly agendas and secondly to enable the "less able" to identify museum content using the 'virtual' world of the Internet.

The website will be constructed by MIBEC Enterprises to the wishes of the Board of Trustees

Navigation & Search

It is worth taking a little time to familiarise yourself with the Navigation & Search facility. Those of you with Internet experience will find it very straight forward.  The 'Search' instructions here are those used for Windows Internet Explorer®.

This web site has been constructed using Microsoft Frontpage®.  There are navigation buttons under the BANNER at the top of the screen.  There are additional hyperlinks to return you to the appropriate page and other 'book-marked' areas within the text.  These hyperlinks are coloured and underlined, they start off a red colour, orange while its searches and ends up green.  Numbered reference links within the squared brackets [] are also hyperlinks and if present on a page will work in both directions.

In order not to clutter the pages, some of the illustrations may be shown as 'Thumbnails', these may also be hyperlinks, click on these and the browser will display the full size image from the photograph library or take you another page.  Remember to use the browser's BACK button (usually the second bar down, top left) to return to the previous page particularly when, like the photograph library, if there are no obvious hyperlinks on show.

Example for Windows Internet Explorer®

The 'Menu bar' is on the Browser at the top of your Explorer page. Often the third bar down.

The bar has FILE, EDIT ,VIEW, FAVOURITES, TOOLS & HELP.

FILE, & HELP need not be used.
FAVOURITES: Use to clear the favourites list.
EDIT has one of the most useful commands which is 'Find on this Page'.  See below.
VIEW allows you to change the size of text to best suit your needs and, remove the Status Bar & Page Bar if you wish.  ZOOM may be useful but Text Size is normally better to use.
TOOLS - Use as required.

Searching

1 - 'Find on this Page'. (EDIT)

This search facility is part of Windows Internet Explorer®. This search facility (top right corner) will search the open page and is particularly effective when you search two or more words e.g. 'Marie Stopes'.  However, it does NOT search the other pages in the web site, you must open the relevant page first.  Remember that with a web based system like this, a 'page' refers to a complete named section.  Enter 'Marie Stopes' now and you will highlight two entries on this particular page.
